Laid out by Thomas Cubitt for the Grosvenor Estate in the 1820s, Belgravia is defined by its uniform white stucco façades, classical squares and cobbled mews. Much of it is listed and almost all of it falls within the Belgravia Conservation Area, where the architectural uniformity is the point — and protecting it shapes every decision a decorator makes.

The properties we work in

Belgravia's grand stucco-fronted terraces around Belgrave Square, Eaton Square and Chester Square sit alongside intimate mews houses off Eaton Place. The stucco façades, ornate cornices, pilasters and wrought-iron balconies are the area's signature — and its principal decorating challenge, demanding finishes that look immaculate while respecting the fabric beneath.

Stucco, lime and breathability

Cubitt-era stucco and lime plaster must breathe. Modern acrylic coatings can trap moisture behind historic masonry and accelerate the very decay they appear to prevent. Where the substrate calls for it we specify breathable mineral and lime-based systems and traditional oil finishes, chosen for vapour permeability as much as appearance — the difference between a façade that lasts and one that blisters.

The Grosvenor Estate & Westminster

Belgravia's conservation guidelines typically restrict external colour to the estate's established off-whites and creams, maintaining the uniformity across the terraces. We work within Grosvenor Estate management requirements and Westminster planning controls, so the work is correct in process as well as finish.

Behind the terraces: the mews

Belgravia is two areas in one. In front stand the great stucco terraces; behind them run the mews — smaller, brick-faced, and now some of the most carefully finished small houses in London. Mews work has its own character: compact rooms that expose every flaw at close range, garages become kitchens, and light wells that punish a badly chosen white. The painting must be tighter, not looser, as the rooms get smaller.

Between the two sit the lateral conversions — grand first floors joined across a terrace — where ceiling heights, cornices and window proportions deserve decoration that respects the original architecture even where the walls have moved.
